Love, Cutter
Michelle Jester
Publication date: August 28th 2018
Genres: Contemporary, New Adult

After an attempted suicide Carter finds himself in a coma. He is able to hear the world around him, yet he can’t move. What he hears propels Carter to begin to see life in a new way, especially when one of his nurses, Kinley, shares parts of her tragic past with him. Soon, Carter realizes he is falling in love with her.

Months after being transferred from the hospital, to a rehabilitation facility, he suddenly wakes up with a passion to live that he never had before and a determination to find the one person he feels may be able to help him put the pieces of his life together again. However, when he returns to the hospital, Kinley is gone and Carter must try to find her based solely on the things she shared with him while he was in a coma.

Only, nothing is as it seems and Carter learns the biggest lesson of them all… the differences between expectation, perception, and reality.

Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes & Noble / iBooks / Kobo

Wow! What a story! I had no idea what I was getting into, but I was not expecting to go on such a roller coaster of emotion.

Carter, seeing no other way through his pain, attempts to take his life, and ends up in a coma. Kinley, assigned to him as his nurse, spends time each day talking and reading to him. What she doesn’t know is that through it all, Carter can hear her.

Over the course of Carter’s time in the hospital, a connection is formed, though Carter has never seen or spoken to Kinley. Out of concern for Kinley’s well-being and for her career, Big Bertha, the head nurse, has her transferred, having seen the signs of Florence Nightingale Syndrome before.

The emotional intensity of this book is EVERYTHING! A bond between two strangers has a trickle down effect on those around them, most unaware.

While this book deals with highly difficult subject matter, such as suicide, self-harm, and death, it is written in such a graceful manner that doesn’t dance around the hard edges, rather calling it like it is. It is a perfect telling of self-discovery and overcoming adversity. The underlying message is that hope is everything.

Book Review and Blog Tour – The Impossibility Of Us by Katy Upperman

The Impossibility of Us
Katy Upperman
Published by: Swoon Reads
Publication date: July 31st 2018
Genres: Contemporary, Romance, Young Adult

The last thing Elise wants is to start her senior year in a new town. But after her brother’s death in Afghanistan, she and her mother move from San Francisco to a sleepy coastal village.

When Elise meets Mati, they quickly discover how much they have in common. Mati is new to town too, visiting the U.S. with his family. Over the course of the summer, their relationship begins to blossom, and what starts out as a friendship becomes so much more.

But as Elise and Mati grow closer, her family becomes more and more uncomfortable with their relationship, and their concerns all center on one fact—Mati is Afghan.

Beautifully written, utterly compelling, and ultimately hopeful, THE IMPOSSIBILITY OF US asks—how brave can you be when your relationship is questioned by everyone you love?

Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes & Noble / iBooks / Kobo

This book was amazing! I found it to be realistic, eye-opening in so many ways and full of that teen angst we all remember.

The characters were beautifully developed, their dialogue so genuine that I found myself drawn into their world fairly quickly.

Elise is no stranger to loss, with a father that took off when she was very young, a mother completely absorbed in the writing of her romance novels, and an older brother killed in action while deployed in Afghanistan. In the summer before her senior year, her mother uproots her to move to the town where her sister-in-law and niece live.

There, she meets Mati, a young man temporarily staying in the US from Afghanistan, while his father is receiving cancer treatment. They form a fast friendship despite the cultural barriers that threaten to divide them.

I say this book was eye-opening because I had no idea what life must be like for a foreigner on American soil. I was clueless to the hate they are exposed to daily, the fear they experience and the risks they take doing the most mundane things, like walking to the grocery store. Having never been exposed to that sort of prejudice, myself, I have to admit that I felt ashamed of my blinders.

This was an absolutely beautiful book about overcoming those barriers and prejudices. I would highly recommend it to anyone and everyone!

Book Review and New Release – Who We Might’ve Been (Billie Dixon #3) by D. L. Pitchford

Synopsis

How many second chances does one person deserve?

After an eye-opening summer abroad, Billie Dixon’s world has fallen apart. Her childhood best friend has replaced her. Her boss at the gallery doesn’t think she’s paid enough dues to be a “real artist.” And Xander ignores her, even though they’re roommates. But she’s made her peace with that.

When her photography professor partners her with Dahlia Finnick, it’s only a matter of time before she intrudes on Billie’s life. And this time, Dahlia pursues what she’s always wanted—Billie—and she doesn’t care who she hurts in the process. Even if that person is the object of her affections.

Can Billie look past Dahlia’s faults and give her a second chance? Can she give one to herself?

Now, Billie has to choose between the acceptance she craves and the love she lost. But to mend her broken relationships, she must take her first leap of faith.

So by now, you all must know I am a huge D.L. Pitchford fan! I FLOVE this series and am obsessed with Xander! Of course, I love all the other characters too… even the ones I have a love-hate relationship with (Dahlia)!

Who We Might’ve Been checked all of the boxes for me! I have to admit that I have binge-read it not once, but TWICE and the second time it was even better! It met every expectation I had after reading books one and two.

The storyline moves quickly and it was such an easy read! The dialogue between characters is natural and I had a ton of laugh out loud moments.

This is a must read for all YA fans!

Book Review and Blog Tour – Pulse Omnibus by Kailin Gow

Kailin Gow

This Omnibus contains 4 Full-length Novels in the PULSE Vampire Series, now in development as a Film starting with its Prequel, Mysterious Teacher.

Loved it! Very exciting storyline, can’t wait for the next one…. – Ariana, early 20s.

Pulse is fast paced and intriguing, the story has twists at every turn and the ending leaves you open mouthed and wanting more. Kailin did a wonderful job in creating this vampire world. – Melissa Silva, The Bookshelf

Ever since I was little, I’ve loved vampire books, and this one does not disappoint. – Amy (Books, College, and Other Random Things)

I know that I seem to say the same thing everytime that I review a Kailin book but man can she write, no matter whatever she writes I can never seem to put the book down whenever I pick one up. This has become another one of my favourite Kailin series and I highly recommend it. – Head Stuck in a Book Blog

Kailin Gow is a multiple Award-winning author, film and tv director/producer, and speaker. You can learn more about her at: KailinGow.com.

Goodreads / Amazon

This series is the first I have read by Kailin Gow. The concept for the storyline is solid and made for an interesting read; however, I have to say that I didn’t care for the writing style much. I had a difficult time following much of the story, as the writing felt forced – superfluous words in order to make it sound better – but it just didn’t work for me. The dialogue between characters felt like children attempting to have adult conversation.

But, back to the storyline. I truly enjoyed it, and rather than being discouraged with the writing style, I forged on, as I truly wanted to know what happened from one book to the next.

I felt that this was a unique spin on the typical vampire story, and it intrigued me. (This is a good thing, as reading the same old story concept is trying!) I did enjoy the characters, their struggles and the battles were full of the right amount of tension.

I actually look forward to book 5, as I have to know how the story ends.

Author Bio:

Kailin Gow loves things that are edgy, cool, bright, exciting, hopeful, glittery, and jaw-droppingly awe-inspiring. She loves writing, reading, and filming stories about people whose journeys take them beyond their boundaries – physically, psychologically, intellectually, and emotionally to arrive a point and a place of inspiration and hope. Her works have been recognized by the leaders in the industry in book publishing and entertainment to be “innovative” and “disruptive”, earning her awards from ALA, The IBPA, and festivals.

ENJOY THIS EXCERPT:

“I’ll go back home with you, Evan,” AJ said as tears formed, knowing that this was right. In order to live an honest life, she had to face her past.

She needed to free Evan and forgive him.

“You will?”

She nodded. “I realize I haven’t been fair to you. I haven’t been fair to you for a long time. What you did to me hurt, but I shouldn’t have let you go to Vegas and Stanford thinking I’d join you. I shouldn’t have kept Duke a secret.” Tears skimmed her skin. “I have missed you, and I thought I was doing the right thing. I thought you were more than capable of living a life without me. After prom, I didn’t think you’d need me in your life anymore.”

Evan shook his head. “Are you kidding?”

AJ brushed her stupid tears away.

He closed the distance in a matter of breaths, wrapping an arm around her back and digging his fingers into her hair, holding her tight. Protectively. As if he was afraid that if he let her go, it would be the end of them. Just like all the times he held her, AJ’s arms looped around his waist as her tears continued to fall onto his shirt.

She inhaled a deep breath.

The smell of him.

The feel of him.

This was home.

This was right.

“I’ll always need you,” he whispered into her ear. “Always, Alexandra. Even if you don’t need me, I’ll always need you.”

“I need you,” she confessed in a tiny, vulnerable voice. “I’ve tried not to need you, but I do.”

Evan nodded. The side of his face brushing against hers. Then, after a long moment, he pulled back. His hands settled on the sides of her neck as they had done so many times before.

This felt natural.

This felt so familiar.

No one else could hold her like this and make their marks their own on her skin.

His smile was slow to curve. It wasn’t quite full, but it was honest. It was a glimpse of the version of him she loved.

“Are you willing to trust me again?”

Unlike before, AJ nodded. “Yes, if you’re willing to trust me again.”

He let out a relieved sigh. “AJ, I trust you. While I was at Stanford, I trusted that when I finally found you, you’d let me back into your life and we’d get this all worked out.” The sound of a key being inserted into the door had Evan’s hands falling away from her face. And just as the door opened, he whispered, “No matter what happens to us, I’ll always want and need you, Alexandra.” His smile was honest, and she nodded, believing him.

Book Review

Book Review – Reflection by Jessica Roberts

Synopsis

Bright, spunky Heather Robbins has escaped her small hometown and is anxiously beginning her freshman year of college. Rising above her rocky childhood, she’s found a place where good things are finally starting to happen: her own apartment, refreshing college classes, and an intense attachment to a mysterious and rugged classmate, Nick Richards.

But when her dreamy college life turns out to be nothing more than a wonderful dream while resting in a coma, questions threaten.

Now, Heather must press forward to unlock the real past, and find the answers buried deep in her mind. What she unlocks instead is a roller coaster ride through flashbacks, embellished memories, and a whirlwind romance.

And when it’s all over and she comes face to face with the truth, will she lose everything she’s fallen in love with?

This book was truly a pleasant surprise. I had a very difficult time getting into it and almost gave up: however, I am so glad that I persevered!

The beginning was very confusing and I felt it was a bit disjointed, but the pieces began to fall into place and I found myself unable to put the book down.

The main characters are well developed, and I absolutely loved Nick. I found myself giggling over and over at the interactions between Heather and Nick. Their playful banter was so realistic.

I would have liked to see Creed developed more fully, as he plays such a huge role in Heather’s life, but I am hoping that he will take a more prominent role in book 2.

I did find the grammatical and formatting errors to be pretty distracting, but I hope that because this is a review copy that those were corrected prior to the final publishing.

There were a lot of emotional ups and downs in this storyline, and I have to read the second book, because I must know what happens next!

Book Review and Blog Tour – Love Scene, Take Two by Alex Evansley

Love Scene, Take Two
Alex Evansley
Published by: Swoon Reads
Publication date: June 12th 2018
Genres: Contemporary, Romance, Young Adult

Debut author Alex Evansley delivers a sweet summer romance in this inventive novel about a young heartthrob and teen author falling in love.

Teddy Sharpe is kind of famous. He might actually be on his way to being really famous, especially if he’d nailed an audition for the lead role in the movie adaption of the newest bestselling young adult book series. There’s just one problem: He totally blew the audition. And he’s stuck in a tiny North Carolina airport. And his maybe-ex-girlfriend kind of just broke up with him.

The weekend isn’t exactly looking good until Bennett Caldwell, author of the very book series he just auditioned for, takes pity on him and invites him to her family’s lake house. Away from the glitz and glam of Hollywood for a few days, Teddy starts to relax . . . and somehow he and Bennett just click. But dating is hard enough when you aren’t the subject of several dozen fanblogs, and the Internet is full of juicy gossip about Teddy and Bennett . . . gossip that Bennett might not be prepared to handle.

Chosen by readers like you for Macmillan’s young adult imprint Swoon Reads, Alex Evansley’s debut novel, written from both Bennett and Teddy’s perspectives, will have teens laughing, swooning, and falling in love along with these fantastically relatable characters.

Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes & Noble / iBooks / Kobo

What a great read! I absolutely loved this book! I am shocked to find out that this is Alex Evansley’s debut novel! This book gave me all the feels!

Teddy Sharpe, kinda famous actor, gets the opportunity to audition for the lead role in Parachutes, a novel being adapted to the big screen.

After basically being dumped by his girlfriend over text, and stranded in a North Carolina airport, he spends the weekend with Bennett and her family, only to find out that Bennett is the author of the novel he auditioned for. (And published at 16… WHAT?!?!)

I don’t want to give too much away, but I could write about this book forever!

Yay’s:

The characters are rich and complex. I found myself wanting to be friends with them… and I found myself wanting to choke Liz at times. The storylines entertaining – I wanted to keep turning pages to see what happened next!

Nay’s:

The lingo was a bit hard for me to follow at times. (I didn’t think I was that far out of the loop, but this made me feel old! I think when using the language that seems to be made for social media and texting, it is helpful to provide an explanation, as not all readers are young adult!

I highly recommend this for any fans of angsty young adult romance! You will not be disappointed!

Author Bio:

Alex Evansley is a twenty-something-year-old writer from North Carolina. Her specialized talents include putting on workout clothes and not working out, sleeping during the day, losing socks, and procrastinating stories she’d like to write. Love Scene, Take Two is her debut novel.

Yay’s:

The characters are well-developed. I found them easy to identify with. The story takes you on an emotional roller-coaster. I found myself laughing, crying and feeling angry. It is a quick and easy read. I couldn’t put it down and read it in one sitting.

Nay’s:

The storyline was a bit on the predictable side; however, that did not detract from the story at all. While, I was pretty sure I knew early on what would happen, I had to keep reading.

All in all, this was a very enjoyable read. Fans of YA Romance will absolutely love it!
