Book Review – Colton (Kingsbrier Quintuplets) by Jody Kaye

Amazon Description:
I spent years in the military molding myself into someone better. After the accident, entire parts of my life missing. Memories, my career, my leg… My one and only best friend who has run off and gotten married. Didn’t she know I was in love with her?
With nothing left, I give up and block everyone out. That’s when my family brings Keely here to get me back on my feet. She’s regimented and won’t put up with my lousy attitude. Sure wish Keely used the same tactics on her daughter. That girl is out of control.
I won’t put up with the kid’s bad attitude and put my foot down. That’s when the three of us turn into something more. The family of my own I never thought I’d get. The life I was so sure I’d lost out on.
A struggling single mom is the last woman I’d expect to heal a loner’s soul and rebuild their confidence. Except as Keely unlocks my heart, the secret she’s kept to keep her child safe may destroy me.

Simply said, I have loved every single one of the Kingsbrier Quints. Colton took the cake for me. Jody has outdone herself!
Colton Cavanaugh is a man who has survived being shot fighting for our country and continues to serve with pride, until a tragic accident with the tractor leaves him crippled, and angry at anyone and everyone, with little will left to survive.
The family hires Ginny’s sister Keely to take over his physical therapy, recognizing it may save his life. Keely and her almost teenage daughter Gracyn move in to Colton’s house and the fireworks begin!
There hasn’t been a character in this series that I haven’t loved…. well except for Alan Adair, Keely’s father. Keely and Gracyn are no exception. I love Keely’s courage and quiet determination. Gracyn is full of sass and she made me laugh… over and over again!
I felt like I was on a rollercoaster ride, which is par for the course with Jody’s books. Laughter, crying… it’s all part of the gig!
While I am terribly sad to have this journey end, I couldn’t have asked for a better conclusion! I know this is a series I will read time and again!

Book Review – Evanthia’s Gift (The Gift Saga Book 1) by Effie Kammenou

Description:
Sophia Giannakos will settle for nothing less than the rare love her parents share. At a tender and impressionable age, she has found her soul mate in Dean, the boy she has known her whole life — until secrets and deceptions pull them apart. No stranger to heartache, Anastacia, Sophia’s mother, attempts to comfort her, without revealing ugly family truths that could haunt her daughter’s future.
In the year 1956, Anastacia, a former NYU student, finds herself in the challenging role of a single parent. Left with emotional wounds from a bad marriage, she is reluctant to trust and resists her growing feelings for Alexandros, an old acquaintance. But his persistence and unconditional love for Ana and her child is eventually rewarded and his love is returned. In a misguided, but well-intentioned effort to protect the ones they love, both Ana and Alex keep secrets — ones that could threaten the delicate balance of their family.
The story continues in the 1970’s, as their daughter attempts to negotiate between two cultures. Greek-American teenagers, Sophia and Dean, have shared a special connection since childhood. Although their desire for one another is undeniable, Dean resists her, rebelling against the pressure his father places on him to uphold his Greek heritage. When he can no longer fight his feelings, Dean asks Sophia to conceal their love. She hesitantly complies, until it becomes too much for her. Like her mother, Sophia loves with every fiber of her soul, leaving her shattered when Dean pulls away from his family, culture and ultimately his love for her, leaving her no choice but to find a life different than the one she’d hoped for.
Evanthia’s Gift is a multigenerational love story spanning fifty years and across two continents, chronicling the lives that unify two families.

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails … always perseveres. —Corinthians 13:4–8

I have no words for how this book has touched my life! Simply put, I believe it is perhaps the most beautiful story I have ever read!
The writing itself is, for lack of a better word, graceful. Effie wove a spell around me, and held me captive as I read.
The story, you ask? Incredible! I was transported to Greece, and felt as if I were there. The characters were so real. I couldn’t choose a favorite, if I wanted to, but if forced, I would say, Ana, full of grace, wisdom, and an all-encompassing love for her family, she reached out and wound herself into the threads of my heart.
Having just lost my own step-mother to a long illness, I knew that this was going to be a difficult read, and I was right. In many ways, I was left raw from the grief; however, it brought me back around to the lesson that was most important – “Live your life and love with everything within you” (Ana to Sophia). There were many “ugly cries” as I read this book, but there was also incredible joy.
There is so much more that I could write about this book, but I would prefer to keep it simple. Read it! You will be thankful you did!

Effie, thank you for blessing me and giving me the gift of this story. Words are not enough to express my gratitude. I needed an outlet for my grief, and I was able to find hope in your story! Your mother must have been an incredible woman. I am thankful that you shared her with us in Ana’s story.
Much love, Kim

New Release and Book Review – Colette (Kingsbrier Quintuplets #5) by Jody Kaye @JodyKaye

Publication Date: February 14, 2019
Coming-of-Age / Family Saga
Standalone in the Kingsbrier Quintuplets series
Series number: 5

Description:
I know how to make a man want. I do it so well that it gained me a stalker. I’m not afraid of him,
but of men like him. So living an orderly and private life keeps my anxiety at bay and my family
out of the tabloids.
Devon shows me how freeing chaos can be. He refuses to accept the face I show the world. But
Devon also holds me at arms length… And when he reveals the darkest places inside of him, I
can’t help wondering if he wants me at all.
(This book is a stand alone romance in The Kingsbrier Quintuplets Series.)

Excerpt:
“You’ve got questions for me,” he says.
“Oh so many.”
Devon leads with his heart. I’m not sure why I trust him, but I do. Perhaps it’s that the
Cavanaughs think highly of him. Our interactions at times are so effortless that it seems like I
know everything about this man. I’d say he’s an open book, but for as much as we talk, it’s me
who continues to open up. In comparison, to what I’ve told him about me, I know nothing at all
about Devon and I want to change that.
“What’s the first one?”
“Why is it so easy to talk to you?”
“I understand something inside of you,” he says matter of fact.
I’m not arguing that. There’s no point. We have a connection and I want to see where it’s
leading us.
I turn and start walking backward underneath the weeping limbs of an immense willow. The
drapes hide me and Devon brushes the heavy curtains back.
“Now, what’s the real first one?” Devon knows I’m holding my cards close. Testing if his honesty
holds out.
“Why haven’t you kissed me yet?” My heel hits the first exposed root. The base of the tree is a
few feet away.
“I didn’t think you wanted me to.” He stalks forward at a leisurely pace, but instinct tells me that if
I ran and hid behind the trunk that Devon would give chase. I ran and hid behind the trunk that Devon would give chase.
“Liar.”

As you may know by now, I absolutely love the Kingsbrier Quintuplets series! When I say love, really what I mean is I am obsessed with the series and when Jody says she has a new book coming out, I jump!

This series is everything that is good about the romance genre, and Colette is no exception! Characters that are larger than life, deep emotion, and sizzling chemistry are just a few of the qualities you can expect to find in all of Jody’s books.

I have to say that I really have had the expectation, all throughout the series, that Colette would end up with Colton, so imagine my dismay when it’s not Colton, but Devon, Adam’s friend and sort of boss! That being said, I found myself sucked in by Devon and he won me over – in a big way!

I found it so easy to identify with Colette. Ok, the big differences between us being that she’s rich and a super-model, and I am anything but… HA! However, she is so incredibly real – struggling with severe anxiety, an eating disorder, and PTSD, not to mention growing up as a ward of the state, and finally finding her family in her 20’s. It was time for her to get her happily ever after!

This book, can easily be read as a stand-alone, but really I recommend reading the ENTIRE series… Each book builds on the last, and you really must get to know the whole family!

Jody, you have outdone yourself!! Two amazing books just a few weeks apart – and they just keep getting better and better! Thank you for letting me be a part of your world! ❤️

Book Review – Adam (Kingsbrier Quintuplets # 4 by Jody Kaye @jodykaye

Publication Date: February 5, 2019
Coming-of-Age / Family Saga
Standalone in the Kingsbrier Quintuplets series
Series number: 4

Description:
Since quitting med school, Adam Cavanaugh has lied about everything, and the truth is catching
up with him. He knows it’s time to prove he’s someone his family can be proud of.
Temple has high standards—ones Adam will never reach. But he wants a woman like her in his
life someday and is willing to let Temple teach him how to be a better man. That is, if he can
keep his heart out of the equation.
Who would have guessed that her perfect life was an illusion? Or that she was falling for him
too? And when Adam’s conscience compels him to tell the truth about his past, will his deceit
stop Temple from trusting anyone ever again?

Excerpt:
“No bridesmaid to hook-up with tonight? Let me guess.” Temple lifted a finger. “Daveigh’s
friends are smart enough to not let you anywhere near them?” Temple glanced around the bar
as if she was looking for someone with loose morals whom she could direct his attention to.
“It’s the other way around. I know not to get involved with my sister’s friends.” He leaned in,
mocking her and whispering in her ear over the noise of the crowd. “They’re too good for me.”
Temple’s eyes were wide when he pulled back. Then she shrugged it off, placing her elbow on
the bar and propping her knuckles up under her chin. “Glad you know your place.”
She really didn’t like him and Adam was torn between being a nice guy and a full-on douche.
“You might want to watch out for the glass,” he reminded before inquiring, “Why are you here
anyhow?”
“I needed dinner and was out of wine.” The drink seemed like the most important part so he
asked her how many glasses she’d consumed. There wasn’t a plate on the bar and, luckily, the
guy on the opposite side was with a date. However, his training made him keenly aware that
Temple attracted attention from other dark corners. “Two, no three. I ordered a third when I
finished eating.”
“Where’s your husband?”
“Out of town.”
“How are you getting home?”
“I have a car…Wait!” She smacked her forehead. “Are you propositioning me? For some
reason, I figured you’d be smoother than that. Kingsbrier, you have a reputation to uphold. I’m,”
she was pensive for a second, rubbing where she’d hit, “disappointed.”
Disappointed, he mouthed. Considering who was saying it and that the comment was about
him, it made perfect sense.
“I’m going to drive you home. That’s all.”. She frowned. “I need my car.”
“Not tonight you don’t.” They’d figure a way to get her back here to pick it up once she was
sober.
Temple looked away. She placed a finger on the smooth part of the broken base, sliding it
toward her. “If I’d cut myself would you’f sewn it up?” She slurred and he was glad he offered.
“Yeah.” He snagged her purse off of the chair back and placed it on her shoulder so Temple
didn’t absently forget it. As they stood she lost her balance, catching herself with a palm to his
chest and patting him there distastefully.
“Gotta love the Hippocratic Oath. I’d save you too, Kingsbrier. Even if I hate you.”
©2019 Jody Kaye

I am a HUGE fan of Jody Kaye! I was hooked the instant I started reading Cavanaugh, the precursor story to the Kingsbrier Quints series, and nothing I have read since has disappointed me!
Adam, book 4 in the series, is Adam’s story. The oldest of the Quints, by only minutes, and heir to the Kingsbrier fortune, Adam has been running from his family, his legacy, and the expectations that come with being the eldest and heir. Expected to take over the family business, Adam chooses instead to go to medical school and become a doctor; however, that didn’t happen. He left med school for the military, and never clued anyone in. Now, Adam has been discharged and his family is still none the wiser. Adam keeps up the facade, while working for a security firm far, far from home.
Unsettled, and unsatisfied with the man he has become, he knows he needs to come clean with his loved ones, but he wants to be able to show them proof that he is becoming a man that they can be proud of before doing so. Of course, that never works, as lie piles upon lie, and just digs Adam further into the hole.
I really loved Adam’s story. I laughed and I ugly cried. Jody has that effect on me. Her story-lines are engaging from the start, full of emotion, and you never know what is coming next.
The characters are so well developed that I feel as if I know them. It is fun coming back to this series and the characters that I love so much – in fact, I am going back through and reading them again.
I believe that while Adam is book 4 in the series, it could be read as a stand-alone. There is a backstory that would be missing; however, Jody does an outstanding job of weaving the stories together, and allowing you to understand the intricacies and dynamics of the relationships without having to go back to the start. I highly recommend reading the entire series, though, as I know you will love the family as much as I do! ❤️❤️

Book Review and Blog Tour – The Fog by Amanda McKinney

The Fog
Amanda McKinney
(A Berry Springs Novel)
Publication date: December 4th 2018
Genres: Adult, Mystery, Romance

Former Marine turned ballistics expert, Wesley Cross is known around town for two things, his rugged good-looks and cocky attitude—until he finds his ex-girlfriend lying in a puddle of blood in his basement. The scene screams setup, but the discovery of a rare gem and a puzzling autopsy suggests the murder goes much deeper than that. Wesley will do whatever it takes to clear his name, including calling in a notoriously headstrong—and sexy—scientist.

While most little girls were playing dress up, Gwyneth Reece was digging in the dirt collecting bugs. Now one of the top forensic entomologists in the country, Gwen reluctantly accepts a job from a pushy cowboy and travels to the small, Southern town of Berry Springs. Heavy storms are brewing, and when she’s forced to check into the creepiest hotel she’s ever seen, she instantly regrets her decision to help out the former Marine.

Following up on a tip, Wesley heads to the Half Moon Hotel but quickly realizes his visit was not by chance. The killer lured him there, and suddenly everyone from the uptight bellman to the wealthy couple just passing through town become suspect. Bodies begin to disappear, and Wesley knows the killer will do anything to get to him…. including hurting the woman who’s kept his head spinning since he first laid eyes on her.

Goodreads / Amazon

The Fog is the first book I have read my Amanda McKinney, but it won’t be my last. I seriously could not put this book down.
I am a sucker for a great mystery. Throw in some romance, and I’m a goner. This is just what Ms. McKinney has accomplished.
From the start, I had to keep turning pages to see what was coming next. Nothing is as it seems, and when a grisly murder takes place in the home of one of the town’s beloved men five years after two disturbing murders, it is apparent that Wes is being set up, but by whom, and why!?!?!
When Gwen, one of the leading forensic entomologists of the day, is brought in, she brings a clue to light that has Wes’ head spinning.
The characters are very well-deserved, the chemistry between them is sizzling and the story-line is so engaging!
This is a must-read for mystery lovers – the perfect blend of suspense, intrigue and romance!

Award-winning author of romantic suspense and mystery, Amanda McKinney wrote her debut novel, LETHAL LEGACY, after walking away from her career to become a writer and stay-at-home mom. Book Review and Blog Tour – Shamrock (Linear Tactical Series) by Janie Crouch

Title: Shamrock
A Linear Tactical Standalone
Author: Janie Crouch
Genre: Romantic Suspense
Release Date: December 4, 2018
Blurb
Every mission
has a price.

He never meant for her to pay it.

Aiden has never left anyone behind. Not a comrade and certainly not an
innocent. But when an undercover mission goes wrong, he’s forced to abandon a
woman trapped in a human trafficking ring.

Violet learned brutally that no one is promised a happy ending. She knows Aiden
blames himself for his part, but she refuses to let her abduction define the
rest of her life.

She won’t be a victim again. And she’s going after what she wants: Aiden.

Watching Violet transform herself into a fierce warrior is the sexiest thing
Aiden has ever seen. The honorable plan would be to stay away from her–let her
heal and grow without the shadow of his mistakes clouding her progress–even
though every instinct tells him to claim her for his own.

But when they discover the danger they thought they’d left behind is closer
than ever, they’ll have to face their deepest fears and fight
side-by-side in order to survive.

I’m not gonna lie! I am head over heels in love with this series! Janie Crouch has done an outstanding job of creating a world full of relatable characters, and the perfect mix of action/suspense and romance!
I was so excited to read Aiden’s story, and I was not disappointed. I was waiting for the series to lose it’s sparkle, but it just hasn’t happened! Thank goodness! Aiden – code name Shamrock – is undercover trying to bring down Spellman’s crime syndicate, as we know from previous books. While working one night, he finds Spellman’s men have a woman working for them who appears to be there under duress. Aiden knows he needs to get her out, but can’t without blowing his cover.
Violet, kidnapped by Spellman’s men and subjected to degradation of the worst kind, recognizes that Aiden is different from the other men, and he gives her that little bit of hope needed to survive the torture and humiliation.
I would truly be hard pressed to choose a favorite book in this series, but Shamrock is definitely a contender for the #1 spot. These books are so well written, the storyline never seems to flatline, the men are swoon worthy, and the women are seriously kick-ass, all in their own ways.
These books could be read as stand-alones; however, the stories are so closely intertwined, I don’t recommend it, as they build on each other and you would be missing a lot of back story.
All I can say is this is an absolute must-read!

Excerpt
Violet knew
what she wanted.

No more
being passive. No more agreeing to what might in fact be good for her but
wasn’t what she really wanted.

“You
respect me,” she said gently.

The relief
flashed and Aiden’s hazel eyes. “Yes. I have nothing but respect for
you.”

“Thank
you,” she whispered, trailing her fingers through his thick hair. “And thank
you for getting me home safely last night. And like I said before, thank you
for getting me out of that hellhole a month ago, for figuring out that I was in
trouble when to anyone else it just looked like a normal part of that
situation.”

His brows
furrowed. “You’re welcome for all those things. But there’s no need—”

She put her
finger up to his lips. “I just wanted to say it one more time to make sure I’d
been clear. Because now I’m done saying thank you. And I think you better take
me inside. Otherwise, Mrs. Mazille and her neighborhood watch might get quite
an eyeful with what I’m planning to do to you.”

There was
only so much a man could take. A line where he snapped. A great deal of his
Special Forces training had been spent learning how to push that line as far
back as possible.

But when
Violet’s fingers reached for the hem of the T-shirt covering her body and began
pulling it off, Aiden found his line very clearly.

I was so incredibly excited to read the second book in the Reverend Cici Mystery series and I can tell you that I was not disappointed. If anything, I enjoyed this book more than the first, and I didn’t think that would be possible.
After experiencing some disturbing dreams that CiCi is convinced are brought to her by her dead sister, Anna Carmen, ACi for short, she is off and running to solve another crime.
I love the characters in this series so much! The Harley riding Reverend (who knew?!?!), Sam, and so many others – each easy to relate to. The dialogue between characters flows easily and is natural.
The storyline is engaging with so many twists and turns, you don’t know if you are coming or going – making a perfect mystery! As with the first book, I had a pretty good idea who the villain was, but I wasn’t completely sure until the very end!
Alexa Padgett is quickly becoming one of my go-to authors! I can’t wait to see what is next!

I really enjoyed Larkin’s character – intelligent, strong and courageous. She has a tough exterior, yet she also has a soft side for those she cares about.

Charlotte can’t change the past. Can’t change the choices she made or
the fact that they cost her everything. All she can do is endure the fallout.
Even if that means putting her future in the hands of Finn, the man who has
every right to want to destroy her.

And can in so many more ways than he thinks.

When Finn’s undercover mission goes impossibly wrong, he’ll have to
depend on Charlotte’s strength in order to survive. But everyone has a
breaking point.

He’s fighting
for what’s right.
She’s fighting
just to survive…

Oh lawdie, how I love this series! I was hooked when I read Cyclone, and Eagle did not disappoint!
Finn and Charlie’s story is equal parts heartbreaking and uplifting, full of action and intrigue, and plain, sweet romance.
It’s impossible not to love the characters, and I felt like I was at a family reunion being reunited with the friends I made in Cyclone.
Janie Crouch’s heroines are dynamic, intelligent, and most importantly, courageous women. Add strong alpha males to the mix and you have a run for your money.
Eagle is a fast read, at least it was for me, as I could not put it down. The storyline is engaging, suspenseful, and action-packed. It is an absolute must-read! I cannot wait for Shamrock to read Aiden’s story!

Book Review and Blog Tour – Death by the River by Alexandrea Weis and Lucas Astor

Death by the River
Alexandrea Weis & Lucas Astor
Published by: Vesuvian Books
Publication date: October 2nd 2018
Genres: Horror, Young Adult

A high school “American Psycho.”

SOME TRUTHS ARE BETTER KEPT SECRET.

SOME SECRETS ARE BETTER OFF DEAD.

Along the banks of the Bogue Falaya River, sits the abandoned St. Francis Seminary. Beneath a canopy of oaks, blocked from prying eyes, the teens of St. Benedict High gather here on Fridays. The rest of the week belongs to school and family—but weekends belong to the river.

And the river belongs to Beau Devereaux.

The only child of a powerful family, Beau can do no wrong. Handsome. Charming. Intelligent. The star quarterback of the football team. The “prince” of St. Benedict is the ultimate catch.

He is also a psychopath.

A dirty family secret buried for years, Beau’s evil grows unchecked. In the shadows of the ruined St. Francis Abbey, he commits unspeakable acts on his victims and ensures their silence with threats and intimidation. Senior year, Beau sets his sights on his girlfriend’s headstrong twin sister, Leslie, who hates him. Everything he wants but cannot have, she will be his ultimate prize.

As the victim toll mounts, it becomes crystal clear that someone has to stop Beau Devereaux.

And that someone will pay with their life.

What a fantastic read! I first became familiar with the writings of Alexandrea Weis and Lucas Astor when I read the Magnus Blackwell series, so I had to read this. I was not disappointed in the least.

True to form, the story takes place in Louisiana, and is steeped in local culture. With well-developed characters and a story line that moves at a very rapid pace, it will keep you turning pages to find out what happens next.

It is fairly gruesome, as rape and brutal assault take center stage in this book. Beau Devereux, golden boy, star quarterback, and heir to the family dynasty has an extremely dark side, reveling in controlling and causing pain. While I didn’t care for the subject matter and it was difficult to read about such violent acts, I had to know what would take place.

I will caution you that if you are highly sensitive to that, this is not the read for you. If you have the fortitude to handle it and want to dive into the darker side of life, you are in for a treat.

Author Bio:

Lucas Astor is from New York, has resided in Central America and the Middle East, and traveled through Europe. He lives a very private, virtually reclusive lifestyle, preferring to spend time with a close-knit group of friends than be in the spotlight.

He is an author and poet with a penchant for telling stories that delve into the dark side of the human psyche. He likes to explore the evil that exists, not just in the world, but right next door behind a smiling face.

Photography, making wine, and helping endangered species are just some of his interests. Lucas is an expert archer and enjoys jazz, blues, and classical music.

One of his favorite quotes is: “It’s better to be silent than be a fool.” ~Harper Lee (To Kill a Mockingbird)

Alexandrea Weis is an advanced practice registered nurse who was born and raised in New Orleans. Having been brought up in the motion picture industry, she learned to tell stories from a different perspective and began writing at the age of eight. Infusing the rich tapestry of her hometown into her award-winning novels, she believes that creating vivid characters makes a story memorable. A permitted/certified wildlife rehabber with the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries, Weis rescues orphaned and injured wildlife. She lives with her husband and pets in New Orleans.
