Cinderella!
My name
is Ashley Ellis…
I was
thirteen years old when my mother – retired supermodel, Tig – married Mosier
Răumann, who was twice her age and the head of the Răumann crime family.
When I
turned eighteen, my mother mysteriously died. Only then did I discover the dark
plans my stepfather had in store for me all along; the debauched “work” he
expected me to do.
With the
help of my godfather, Gus, I have escaped from Mosier’s clutches, but his twin
sons and henchmen have been tasked with hunting me down. And they will stop at
nothing to return my virgin body to their father
…dead or
alive.

I don’t know how I have missed Katy Regenery’s modern fairytale series! They are so on my TBR now! Fragments of Ash is a modern Cinderella story that I didn’t want to end.

I loved so many of the characters – Ashley, Julian, Jock, and Gus… oh, Gus Gus made my heart full! Ashley has never known love, with an addict supermodel for a sister/mother, and a madman for a step-father. When her mother dies, the step-father declares his intent to marry her and produce a tribe of children. She knows she can’t let that happen, so she goes on the run. While in hiding, she learns just what she is made of, and how to rely on someone other than herself.

The storyline moves along nicely and is very engaging! I did not want to put it down!

Instead of going inside, I walk around the house, to the backyard, to see if I can help bring in any dirty dishes, but the picnic table is empty. All traces of our dinner party have already been cleaned up by the Ducharmes siblings.

I look up at the midnight sky, at the dozens and dozens of stars, and I wonder if Gus is right. What he says feels right, but I feel very young and very small as I stare up at the universe. It’s not wrong to give yourself over to loving if the chance arises.

“We get amazing night skies up here.”

I look over my shoulder and find Julian, tall, barefoot, and beautiful, walking toward me.

“Yes, you do,” I answer, giving him a shy and tentative smile before I turn my attention back upward.

My skin prickles with awareness. My lips tingle, remembering the insistent pressure of his. And elsewhere in my body, I clench hard, willing those deep-set tremors not to start up again right now. I want to believe what Gus has told me—that liking and wanting a man isn’t wrong—but it’s new to me, and I need a little time to reconcile my desire and conscience together.

“When I lived in DC, it was what I missed the most, besides Noelle. More than the cheese. More than the beer. More than the skiing.” He stops, standing beside me, staring up at the firmament. “I missed Vermont’s night skies. And the millions of stars.”

“I can see why,” I say. “When I lived in LA, I never saw stars.” I giggle. “I mean, I saw the people kind, but not the sky kind.”

“Who’s the most famous person you ever met?”

“Hmm. Maybe . . . Gigi Hadid . . . or Bella? Hmm . . . Or Cara Delevingne? Kate Moss mentored my m—Tig for a while, um, and she knew Gisele, of course. Also—”

“Wait a second! Gisele? Did you ever meet Tom Brady?” he asks, his voice eager.

“Let me guess.” I glance at his face. “Patriots fan?”

“The biggest.”

“Tig went to their wedding, but I never met him. Sorry,” I say, giggling as he lays a hand over his heart and pretends to cry. “Speaking of the rich and famous, Noelle tells me you met the vice president while you worked in Washington.”

“She did?” His teasing expression disappears quickly as he straightens, dropping his hand. “Uh, yeah. Long time ago.”

“Not so long,” I say.

“Yeah, well . . . I guess it just feels like a while ago.” I wait for him to say more, hoping to learn why he left Washington so abruptly, but he stretches his arms over his head and yawns. “I’m tired. You must be exhausted.”

“At school I was on the dining hall rotation, which meant cooking for one hundred souls regularly. Tonight was a breeze.”

“Your soup was amazing.”
“Thank you.”
“The steak too.”
“Thank you again.”
“And the tart.”
“That was your sister. Let her know you thought so.”
“And the kiss.”

“Thank—” I’m grinning at him, but my eyes widen at his unexpected compliment, and I immediately look back up at the sky. It’s dark out so he can’t see my blush.

His chuckle is soft and low beside me, and maybe I’m wicked for not feeling more guilty, but I feel my smile grow as I trace Orion’s belt. I don’t dare look at him, but I feel him step closer to me, the warmth of his chest radiating against my back. If I moved slightly, one step even, his body would be flush against mine, and the shiver down my arms has nothing to do with the night chill. I want him to touch me, but I know he won’t.

As though he can read my mind, he whispers, close to my ear, “Not unless you ask.”

I close my eyes and say a prayer for strength and virtue, which, sadly, works, because the next thing I hear is his footsteps receding.

“Good night, sweet Ashley,” he says to my back, his voice a low rumble.

My eyes open slowly to the glittering heavens.

“Good night, sweet prince,” I whisper to Julian’s stars.

Book Review and Blog Tour – Cyclone (Linear Tactical #1) by Janie Crouch

He’d protect her
from any threat…
But what if the biggest threat is him?
Doctor Anne Nichols is back in Oak Creek, Wyoming, only because she has
no other options. Here, she was always the shy, stuttering girl, invisible to
everyone.
Except Zac Mackay. The very reason she left in the first place.
Zac’s years in Special Forces taught him survival skills, and he’s
created a company—Linear Tactical—to teach those skills to others, so they
never have to live in fear.
Then why is Annie, the last person he’d ever want to hurt, afraid
of
him
Zac’s determined to wipe the fear from the eyes of the woman who has
never been far from his mind. And fix the mistakes—
his mistakes—that
put that look there in the first place.
But a predator has set his sights on Annie. And now survival
skills
will become much more than lessons…

This was the first of Janie Crouch’s works that I have read; however, I can assure you it will not be the last! I was instantly sucked into this story and could not put it down.

Zac and his band of brothers in every way but by blood live in the small town of Oak Creek, Wyoming. They do a booming business by training others in self defense, survival skills, and weaponry.

Annie, an ER Doctor has returned to town after 6 years in Tampa. Shy, quiet, mostly invisible, and prone to anxiety attacks, is on staff when Zac is brought in after he lays down his Harley to avoid hitting a pregnant dog (who he adopts, by the way).

Annie and Zac have a long, tumultuous history that ended in a one night stand gone bad. How bad, Zac doesn’t remember.

I simply loved Annie’s character. I could identify with her introverted nature, her fear of crowds and her love of books. She prefers to remain invisible, and hope the world passes her by. Zac was so kind and caring and I couldn’t help but love him too.

The story line moves along quickly… too quickly, really! I did not want it to end. It has plenty of nail-biting moments. It was incredibly well-written.

There are some violent scenes that address some tough topics: sexual assault, battery, murder.

I simply can’t wait for Finn and Charlotte’s story to come out!!

“I was here a couple of years ago, but only for a day or
two,” Anne told Zac, looking away. She had booked a room out of Oak Creek both
times she’d dared come back. The thought of staying at The Mayor’s Inn had been
too painful. She couldn’t even look at that hotel without feeling sick to her
stomach.
And she’d avoided everyone—particularly Zac—as much as
possible. Just in case his words about not coming back were still true. She
tried to swallow the panic that threatened to overwhelm her. Maybe he still
felt that way now, even though he hadn’t said anything at the hospital.
“There.” He pointed at her. “That look that just came into
your eyes. I saw it at the hospital. It’s like you’re afraid of me, Annie.” He
took a step closer and she instinctively one back. One of his eyebrows shot up,
letting her know she’d proved his point. “Do you think I’m going to
hurt you?”
“No.” Not physically. She’d never worried that he’d hurt her
that way, despite having five inches and probably fifty pounds—all muscle—on
her.
But he was right. She couldn’t continue living in Oak Creek
with them ignoring everything that had happened that night. What had been said.
What had been done. Maybe she would’ve tried to, and to avoid Zac forever, if
he hadn’t ended up in her ER.
But the truth was, there weren’t enough bushes in this town
for her to jump into. She was going to run into Zac. A lot.
Sometimes all you could do was face the past.
She pulled a breath in. “I’m not scared of you. I mean, I
know you would never hurt me physically. For crying out loud, you wrecked your
motorcycle rather than hit a dog.” She’d meant for her laugh to seem breezy,
but it just sounded stilted. “But yeah, I mean, we can’t pretend like that
night never happened. The stuff we did. Stuff you…we said.”
His eyes narrowed. “That night we spent together after Becky
died.”
“Yeah. That night.” As if they’d had another. “The bottom
line is, I can’t leave here, Zac. No matter what you said then, or even if you
feel the same way now.”
He shook his head, brows furrowing. “I don’t expect you to
leave. You’re obviously a respected doctor, more than competent. Why would you
think I wanted you to leave?”
Some of the tension she’d been carrying since his arrival in
the ER began to ease. He was right. Something said in grief and anger six years
ago didn’t necessarily hold true all this time later. She was silly for
thinking it did. “Okay, well, it’s good to know you don’t feel the same as you
did back then.”
He took a single predatory step closer, and she tensed
again. “I said something that night to make you think you needed to leave?”
She stared at him, her mouth flopping open like some sort of
fish. “You don’t remember what you said?”
Those words would be engrained in her memory forever.
Get out and don’t come back.
He rubbed his forehead. “That whole night is fuzzy for me.”
I can’t even bear to look at you. You just betrayed the
only person in this town who ever wanted you here.
Tossing her naked into the hallway before flinging her
clothes at her.
“What do you remember?” She forced the words past a throat
that seemed to have dried up.
His hand moved to the back of his neck. “Honestly, not much
at all. It’s sort of a blur.”
She retreated a step from him again. That night had been the
most important night of her life. The best. The worst. It had changed the very
fabric of her being.
And it was sort of a blur for him.

Book Review and Blog Tour – Island on Fire by Sophie Schiller

Island on Fire
Sophie Schiller
Publication date: April 10th 2018
Genres: Adult, Historical, Thriller

In the lush, tropical world of Martinique where slavery is a distant memory and voodoo holds sway, Emilie Dujon discovers that her fiancé, a rich sugar planter, has been unfaithful. Desperate to leave him, she elicits the aid of a voodoo witch doctor and is lured into a shadowy world of black magic and extortion. When the volcano known as Mount Pelée begins to rumble and spew ash, she joins a scientific committee sent to investigate the crater. During the journey she meets Lt. Denis Rémy, an army officer with a mysterious past.

At the summit, the explorers discover that a second crater has formed and the volcano appears to be on the verge of eruption. But when they try to warn the governor, he orders them to bury the evidence for fear of upsetting the upcoming election. As the pressure builds, a deadly mudslide inundates Emilie’s plantation and she disappears. With ash and cinders raining down, chaos ensues. Left with no choice, Lt. Rémy deserts his post and sets off on a desperate quest to rescue Emilie. But with all roads blocked, can they escape the doomed city of St. Pierre before it’s too late?

Goodreads / Amazon

I have to admit that when I began reading this book, I did not think I would enjoy it. I found it a bit slow to start and it was difficult to follow along. I wasn’t sure where the storyline was going, or even what the point of the story was. I am so glad that I pressed on and kept reading. What I found was that I could not stop turning pages.

Island on Fire takes place in Saint-Pierre, Martinique, at the foot of the “extinct” volcanoes, Mount Pelee. Emilie Dujour is the daughter of a plantation owner. I would not go so far as to say she is pampered; however, she has lived a life of privilege.

Emilie is fascinated by the unexplainable activity taking place on Mount Pelee, and spends quite a bit of time observing and journaling what she sees. The governor appoints a scientific committee to journey up to the summit and report back on their findings, and Emilie convinced them to allow her to join them. Here she meets Lieutenant Denis Remy, a soldier attached to the local garrison. What they find at the summit is terrifying; however due to the impending elections, the governor demands that they not create hysteria and assure the locals that the volcano is settling, knowing just the opposite is true.

I found the descriptions of the scenery both captivating and horrifying and the characters very well developed. I found myself imagining that I could smell the acrid smoke and sulfur from the volcano. It was easy to picture the terrifying scenes as they played out, and to imagine the desperation that the locals and the refugees must have felt.

The author clearly has a good grasp on the mystical voodoo practices, and if that is not true, I was convinced anyhow. I imagine that while this is a work of fiction, it was rich with historical accuracy, which was the most fascinating part for me.

This book was truly a gripping story that had me on the edge of my seat, and turning page after page to find out what happened next.

A
FLIRTY, SEXY, AND HEARTFELT FORBIDDEN SPORTS ROMANCE SET IN THE WORLD OF
PROFESSIONAL DANCE. (STANDALONE)
Lex
I came to L.A. with dreams bigger than me.
To learn from the best choreographers in the business and secure a professional
dance gig working for Hollywood’s elite.
Everything was going according to plan—until I was literally shoved into the
arms of the one man who could make or break my career.
Come to find out, it wasn’t my career I had to worry about.
It was my heart.
Theo
Everything about
Alexandra “Lex” Quinn screamed amateur, save for the way she moved across the
dance floor.
She was athleticism and grace, precision and passion, and she had a stage
presence I couldn’t tear my eyes from.
I wanted her…on my team, in my bed.
There was only one problem…
I couldn’t have both.

K.K. Allen has struck gold again! Easily one of my favorite authors, Center Of Gravity did not disappoint. I literally could not put this book down. Thank goodness I started it on the weekend so that I could finish it!!

I love anything that centers around the world of dance or music, so when I began reading, I was instantly transported into the book.

Lex and Shane, best friends and roommates, moved to LA from Seattle to pursue their dreams of becoming professional dancers. They live in a skeevy apartment with air mattresses for beds while studying dance at the renowned Gravity Dance Complex. Shane convinces Lex to attend an open audition, and though she didn’t get the spot, it spurs her on. When she receives an invitation to audition for another opportunity, she goes all out.

Turns out, the audition is for a back-up dancer to pop sensation, Winter, and she would be working with her idol/nemesis, the famed choreographer, Theodore Noska.

I absolutely loved the characters in this book. Shane, hopelessly flamboyant, lover of stilettos, and truly loyal friend, may be my favorite; however, they are all so beautifully developed that I found myself able to identify with so many of them. Reggie gave me the creeps, I felt so sorry for Winter, a child that had to grow up way too fast, and Theo and Lex… they made me want to swoon!

The storyline moves along at a very fast clip and it was over way too soon. I had to keep reading to find out what was coming next!

This truly is a sweet, sexy read that all lovers of a happily ever after will enjoy immensely!

Publication date: July 15th 2018
Genres: Fantasy, New Adult, Romance

Somebody wanted Minerva Rus dead. They succeeded. But Minerva isn’t letting a little thing like death stop her.

After the dangerous adventure that killed her in Memortality, Minerva Rus has reconciled herself to being dead. She and her also-dead boyfriend Raven share an amazing gift that allows them to bring the dead back to life―including each other. Now that Jules, their most dangerous enemy, has been banished from reality and trapped inside her own mind, Minerva and Raven plan on enjoying the eternity of their unnatural lives.

But immortality isn’t safe. Minerva and Raven’s life-giving powers mysteriously fade, forcing them to take refuge in The Between, a shadowy realm of memories that lies between life and death. What’s more, their old adversary Jules is on the loose, partnered with a resurrected Nazi scientist planning a monstrous experiment that will change the destiny of the human race. And now it’s up to a 21-year-old dead girl to save the world―again.

Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes & Noble

Paralucidity is the second book in the YA fantasy Memortality series. Not having read the first book, I was a bit confused; however I found myself quickly drawn into the fast-moving storyline.

I found the characters to be fascinating, and was intrigued by their plight. Minerva and Raven are dead, but somehow brought each other back to some state of being through their memories of each other.

A super top secret branch of the government, the FIA, intends to program them to be a sort of super soldiers or weapons. Carson, and FIA agent, turned good guy, breaks them out and they are on the run.

Again, I was a bit confused in the beginning, so I would not consider this book a good standalone; however, it was extremely well-written and all in all was extremely entertaining!

Book Review and Blog Tour – Superhero High by T. H. Hernandez

Superhero High
T.H. Hernandez
Published by: Soul Mate Publishing
Publication date: July 5th 2018
Genres: Adventure, Science Fiction, Young Adult

Sixteen-year-old Annarenee Stevens is the sole member of her family without a super power. The only time she feels powerful is in the pool. With her sights set on swimming for U.C. Berkeley, she’s ready to win it all at the State championship and secure her future.

When the government unexpectedly ends the secret Genetically Enhanced Asset (GEA) program, Annarenee is uprooted from Dayton, the only home she’s ever known, and relocated to San Diego with all of the other GEA families. Queen of her public school, Annarenee is just another zero at Superhero High, a school without any sports teams.

With the end of the program, her hero older brother now needs a college education, too, meaning the only way Annarenee is getting into Berkeley is on a scholarship. Her dream is slipping through her fingers, no matter how tightly she clings to it. To make matters worse, super hot superhero, Ren Gonzalez, is paying too much attention to her. The kind of attention that has Ren’s ex-girlfriend intent on making Annarenee’s life even more miserable.

But when heroes begin disappearing, zeros and heroes will be forced to team up in order to solve the mystery. If they don’t kill each other first.

Goodreads / Amazon

Superhero High was a fantastic read that kept me on the edge of my seat! It took me back to my video game playing days and reminded me a bit of City Of Heroes. Not sure why I made that connection, but I did.

It was a well-written book with fantastic characters and I found myself drawn into the story immediately. Annarenne, AR to her friends and family, was born into a family of genetically altered heroes, but she had no powers, and is known as a zero.

When the government decides to stop funding the GEA (Genetically Enhanced Asset) program, AR’S family has to pick up and move across the country and start over.

In California, she meets Ren, a hero with looks that would stop traffic. Unfortunately, Ren’s ex has taken an instant dislike to AR and will do everything she can to make life miserable for AR.

When heroes start disappearing, they all have to work together to find them, as the agency sure isn’t doing anything.

I absolutely loved Ren! He is a genuinely kind and caring young man. AR is incredibly brave and loyal and I found myself cheering for her constantly.

This is a must-read for lovers of young adult fiction!

My name is Ashley Ellis…

I was thirteen years old when my mother – retired supermodel, Tig – married Mosier Răumann, who was twice her age and the head of the Răumann crime family.

When I turned eighteen, my mother mysteriously died. Only then did I discover the dark plans my stepfather had in store for me all along; the debauched “work” he expected me to do.

With the help of my godfather, Gus, I have escaped from Mosier’s clutches, but his twin sons and henchmen have been tasked with hunting me down. And they will stop at nothing to return my virgin body to their father

…dead or alive.

** Contemporary Romance. Due to profanity and very strong sexual content, this book is not intended for readers under the age of 18.**

Book Review and Blog Tour – Jaclyn and the Beanstalk by Mary Ting

Jaclyn and the Beanstalk
Mary Ting
Published by: Vesuvian Books
Publication date: September 4th 2018
Genres: Fantasy, Young Adult

What fate awaits a girl who hears monsters at night…

Sixteen-year-old Jaclyn looks up to her father. An honest man who once fought for the king, he now teaches Jaclyn how to use her wits—and her sword.

But he has a secret. And his secret may have a connection to the one thing Jaclyn is hiding from him.

Upon hearing “monsters” are terrorizing the small villages around Black Mountain, Jaclyn’s father and his friends head out to hunt them … but they don’t return.

Armed only with her sword and three magic beans—a gift from a mysterious old woman—Jaclyn sets out for Black Mountain to save her father.

On her climb, one bean drops and grows into a beanstalk, catching her when she falls.

She isn’t the only one that takes the ride. Jack, her childhood friend and secret crush, is following her.

Together, Jaclyn and Jack must battle to save not only their fathers, but the townspeople the beasts plan to lay waste to before it’s too late.

Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes & Noble / iBooks / Kobo

There are not enough good things that I can say about this book! I was thoroughly engrossed from cover to cover.

I mean… who doesn’t like a good tale of Jack and the Beanstalk? Change things up to include a strong-willed heroine, with more courage than you can imagine, hordes of monsters, and a sweet love story, and it doesn’t get much better!

Mary Ting’s rendition of this beloved tale is truly spectacular. I am a sucker for a strong female protagonist, and Jaclyn was no exception.

The characters were so beautifully developed, even the big, nasty monster, that I couldn’t help but love them all. The storyline was so full of twists and turns, that although it is a familiar story, I never knew what was coming next. I was on the edge of my seat for much of the book.

I hope that Ms. Ting writes more fairy tales with her own spin! This is one book you truly don’t want to miss out on.

When she started reading new adult novels, she fell in love with the genre. It was the reason she had to write one-Something Great. Why the pen name, M Clarke?
